Colour with MAREMMA your dull days
Founded in ancient days, on a hill, Campagnatico dominates the valley of the river Ombrone.
Across slopes of olives and vineyards, you can catch a glimpse of the
sea between the shores of the park of Uccellina up to
the promontory of the Argentario, the fresh breeze that
comes from the sea refreshes the hot summers of Maremma, towards north,
sometimes the slopes of Mount Amiata whiten.
The village, inside the imposing walls, is a typical example of medieval fortress, with narrow paving-stone streets, bold arches, loop-hole for the archers, high towers and belfry which overlook red tiled roofs and strongholds.
Many of the mansions and churches are decorated with fresco figuring saints and scenes of every day life, recently restored to witness the important role of this Aldobrandesca’s fortress, quoted by Dante Alighieri in the Divina Commedia in the late Middle Ages.
Recently the church of S. Maria, near the green gardens
of mercatale, rich of paintings and frescos of famous artists has been
consecrated as the sanctuary of Maremma.
Nevertheless, Campagnatico has also its territorial land: vast and rich of history.
To cite Montorsaio: small jewel set between overbearing
cork-trees and chestnuts; Marrucheti with the castle
of Stertignano; The hill of Sabatina,
where Guido di Monfort refugee during the trial for the murder of Henry
King of England there are also the beautiful farms of Sticcianese,
S. Antonio and Granaione, up to the
modern village of Arcille, which still preserve the rural
traditions specially in their dishes (acquacotta, spelt soup, wild-boar
with olives) and genuine products (oil, wine, cheese, delicatessen, saffron)
it can be tasted in pleasant farm-houses turned out in agritourismi which
cover the whole territory, situated in an area that produces wonderful
wines D.O.C. Montecucco and Morellino
di Scansano.
Last but not the least the local people: peaceful, merry and good natured. A bit of sarcastic gossip typical for Tuscany, the firmness and strength of the people of Maremma, happy to share customs and usages of the place, and proud to offer the fruits of the earth.
It will be difficult to forget, even after a short stay, the flavours, sounds, colours of this land in Tuscany: strong, silent, lively, where sometimes, as by magic, you can’t make out if the sun at the horizon is at dawn or dusk.
