Development is back on track in Navarre, with the recent groundbreaking for the new Visitor Information Center, which will also be home to the Navarre Area Chamber of Commerce. The new building site, located in the Navarre Park, and other future construction in central Navarre is now designated as the "Heart of Navarre" and The Navarre Town Center. The "Heart of Navarre" is the area along Highway 98 from Williams Creek Road on the west, to Ortega Street on the east and the East Bay River to the north. The Town Center Plan and surrounding "Heart of Navarre" are a result of public workshops in which members of the community developed their own vision for growth, to include land use, infrastructure, architecture and landscaping. Highway 87 (running north/south) and Highway 98 (running east/west) bring you into the "Heart of Navarre" and its breathtaking views of the Navarre Beach area. Although it will take a few years for the entire area to develop, plans for the infrastructure are underway for late 2007. The benefits to residents and visitors will be extremely positive for the future of Navarre. Tourism remains a major industry in this area. Major condominium properties are on the horizon as well as one property that will include a mixed use of retail businesses and condos. Tourism generates local incomes and wages in excess of $21 million, tax revenues are estimated at more than $3.4 million, and overall spending impacts the local economy in excess of $38 million annually. Key areas for economic development remain tourism, real estate, transportation, surrounding military communities and the overall growth.
The Military is also a major component of the area's economy. The Air Force's" Hurlburt Field" is Navarre's closest military neighbor, located just 10 miles east of Navarre. Hurlburt Field employs more than 8,000 military and 700 civilian personnel. Home of the Air Commandos since 1961, Hurlburt Field today accommodates the 1st Special Operations Wing (1 SOW), Headquarters Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC), an Air Force major command, and a number of associate units. Navarre is very proud of its military neighbors and the unique mission they uphold - "Any Time, Any Place."
