Fort Walton Beach, Fla. – HCA Healthcare North Florida Division announced today the appointment of Zach McCluskey, as Chief Executive Officer of Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, effective December 6, 2021. In his new role, McCluskey will oversee the growing 267-bed hospital which has served the Okaloosa, Walton and Santa Rosa counties for more than 45 years.

McCluskey will assume leadership from Mitch Mongell, a 25-year veteran of HCA Healthcare. A nationwide search commenced for the new CEO after Mongell announced his retirement earlier in the year. A native of Richmond, Virginia, McCluskey has more than 15 years of healthcare leadership experience within the HCA Healthcare system, following a career in critical care nursing.

“With more than a decade of healthcare leadership and clinical experience, I have every confidence that Zach will carry on the high standards in place for clinical excellence at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center,” said Richard Hammett, President, HCA Healthcare North Florida Division. “Mitch has been an exemplary leader. He has built a talented team of professionals who care deeply about the communities we serve and he should be very proud of the legacy he leaves. We are excited to have someone of Zach’s caliber join the team and continue to advance HCA Healthcare’s mission and focus of caring like family for our patients and colleagues.”

McCluskey most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of HCA Healthcare’s Johnston-Willis Hospital, a 292-bed facility and campus of CJW Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia. The hospital continues to receive high marks including being awarded The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and the first hospital in the U.S. to receive The Joint Commission Gold Seal Certificate of Distinction for Brain Tumor care. Johnston-Willis Hospital is also the first non-academic hospital in Virginia to receive the Comprehensive Stroke Certification by DNV-GL Healthcare, the highest level of competence possible for stroke care.

Prior to his tenure at Johnston-Willis Hospital, McCluskey was CEO at Parham Doctors’ Hospital, where under his leadership the hospital became a top five percent orthopedic hospital in the nation designated by Healthgrades and received total shoulder, hip and knee certifications from the Joint Commission. Parham was also recognized for its Division leading patient and physician satisfaction performance. Prior to his work at Parham, Zach served as Chief Operating Officer at StoneCrest Medical Center in Nashville and associate administrator at HCA Healthcare’s CJW Hospital.

“I am honored to join the HCA Healthcare North Florida Division and become CEO of Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. Mitch and his team have made great strides building strong community relationships and the hospital is consistently recognized as a top general hospital for excellence in quality care and patient safety,” said Zach McCluskey, incoming Chief Executive Officer, Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. “As the only full service acute care hospital serving the tri-county area, we understand the importance of growing our team of experts and our services to meet the changing needs of our communities and I look forward to leading this talented team and providing continued strategic growth for the residents of Northwest Florida.”
